What will change as the 20-somethings move from entry level positions into positions of leadership and greater responsibility? Here’s what I think:
Millennials:
Are you stuck in a bad situation? Wish you were working somewhere else? Wondering if what you’re doing every day really matters? You’re not stuck there forever; you must make the best of your time. Be transparent. Be authentic with yourself and others. Your ideas will sound strange in their ears. You may be ignored, even marginalized for your perspective.
But it is your perspective, it’s valid, and it has value. Don’t give up.

Managers of Millennials:
Next generation leaders crave new challenges and expect you to:
- Leverage their strengths
- Treat them as peers
- Involve them in decision-making
- Build the character they need to manage people
Thinking that’s too much to ask? Saying to yourself that it’s naive to expect managers to use those tactics since, after all, “time is money”? Ask yourself this question:
Which cost is higher: the cost of replacing an employee or the cost of the time investment needed to help a Millennial thrive?
